The Upper Bree Street Market (series) returns on 7 November 2019, which will see The Station on Bree closing the road from Buiten to Orphan Street and welcoming families and friends to socialise outdoors against the backdrop of Table Mountain.
On the first Thursday of every month, townies and tourists are encouraged to walk between the galleries, restaurants and shops of the Mother City and so the market promises to be a celebration of all things “local and lekker”. As with last year, visitors are invited to browse arts and crafts for sale amongst a range of South African vendors (including the Ophilia Collection, Africa Made, Tali and Dami Jewellery, and Kafui Naturals), and graze their way between The Station’s juicy menu and a number of well-known food trucks. Celebrity Chef and MasterChef judge Peter Goffe-Wood of Kitchen Cowboys will be back in the mix alongside Tru Pizza and Kwaito Koeksister to name just a few. “We are set on this being a family-friendly affair”, says The Station on Bree owner Neil Basel.
Cape Town born, Hout Bay based artist Gerhard van der Westerhuizen also returns this year with his larger-than-life oil and acrylic paintings. While his works usually hone in on female faces with intense emotion, his recent trip to Paris spent studying the catwalk has inspired him to merge art with fashion through movement. This will see something fresh filtering into his coming works, already influenced by abstract expressionism. The canvases he will be working on, roughly 1 800 cm x 600 cm in size, will form the beginning of a new series Van der Westerhuizen is masterminding. This is a great opportunity for art lovers and collectors to personally meet the artist.
A highlight of the market is going to be The Pop-Up Gin Experience where a selection of premium gins including Aviation Gin, Cruxland, Beefeater, Whitley Neill, Victoria Gin, Black Rose, Hope Gin and more will be available on the street. This will be in addition to the 120 listed gins The Station on Bree permanently serves indoors.
Taking the idea of a themed restaurant to the next level with “Mind the Gap” signage, iconic subway sounds, and expansive station maps stretched across the ceiling, The Station on Bree, like the London underground, is a melting pot and meeting point of diverse cultures, and the team are preparing for a similar scenario to spill out into the street throughout this market season.
Event days starts at 18h00 with live entertainment on the street, thereafter festivities will carry on indoors. The organisers have said, “come early, stay late.” Entrance is free.
