Searching for that real “five spa” experience
There are many spa’s that offer different kinds of treatments. From back and neck massages to a full body mud wrap, which is said to detox the body; it’s all there, but which one is the best one? Firstly, do some investigation on your own, that is find out where the spa is situated and what treatments they offer. Do they have trained, licensed therapists? And what is the cost of the treatment? Make sure you choose a reputable company to avoid disappointment and a result which you may regret. At the end of it all, you would want to get the best out of your treatment.
Do not be afraid to ask questions and communicate with your therapist if the pressure is too hard that it hurts you. The most common massage is usually the full body massage or the Swedish massage. This is perfect for your first visit at the spa. If you can tolerate pressure to relieve muscle stiffness then a deep tissue massage is ideal. A massage can be slow and gentle or vigorous, depending on the style you require. Remember that it is your body and only you understand it fully. Always ask for the pressure that is suitable for you. The most common and the best techniques which your therapist should use are gliding, kneading, stretching and sometimes tapping. If you have a 60 minute session and you need the therapist to concentrate on a tight muscle area, adjust the process in the beginning. Let her know of your concerns, aches and pains. A massage is supposed to be a relaxing and soothing experience so make the most of it. Allow the release of all the tension from your body and drift into total relaxation.
My most recent experience at a spa was set in a luscious garden and they offered a variety of different massages.
Spa: Labrisa Spa
Location: Mount Nelson Hotel – Cape Town
Treatment: Mud Body Wrap
Duration: 2 Hours
I was greeted with a warm welcome by the spa manager Anja Liebenberg and introduced to my therapist. After being guided to the cloak room for a quick change, I was taken to my room, which already had a relaxed atmosphere. The start was a rooibos scrub, followed by a detoxifying clay cover. You also have a choice of Dermalogica products to choose from. The entire body is wrapped in warm towels and left to absorb all the nutrients. After 20 minutes, I was unwrapped and a quick shower removed the dry clay. A full body massage left me feeling relaxed, energised and hydrated. Would I recommend it? Definitely!
