Cape Town International Ballet Competition
Aside from superb dancers showcasing their breathtaking talent, several outstanding guest artists will also perform at the Cape Town International Ballet Competition – the ‘Ballet Olympics’ – that kicked off this week with intense elimination rounds at the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town.
Dancing at the Finals and two Gala performances will be ballerina Angela Malan from Mzansi Productions and Iain MacDonald, the Artistic Director of the South African Ballet Theatre, dancing a pas de deux from The Merry Widow choreographed by Ronald Hynd. Jazzart Dance Theatre has joined the impressive guest artist line up as well as Dance for All‚s Young InSPIRAtions, a talented non professional group and the excellent Cape Dance Company.
The Cape Town International Ballet Competition, supported by the City of Cape Town and the Chiappini Trust, is set once again to be a thrilling dance event, high on the City‚s cultural calendar. Outstanding dancers, both professional and non-professional, will grace the stage, representing The Republic of South Korea, Argentina, Armenia, Russia, the USA, Brazil, Australia, China, Cuba and with a total of 22 entrants representing South Africa, the most since the competition‚s inception in 2008. The competition offers prize money totalling R300,000 and is the Premier event of its kind on the African Continent, often hailed as the Ballet Olympics. It runs over the period of one week with tough elimination rounds culminating in the Finals and two Gala performances.
The Final is on Friday 2 March at 8pm, with tickets from R65 to R225. At the Gala performance on Saturday 3 March at 8pm, the winners will be chosen from the 12 finalists and will be awarded gold, silver and brpnze medals and big prize money. Due to the popularity of the Gala at previous competitions, a second gala has been added on Sunday 4 March at 3pm at which the CTIBC Winners and distinguished international and SA ballet stars will perform and the South African candidate to compete in the Youth America Grand Prix will be announced.
