Celebrate New Year’s Eve at the Baxter Theatre Centre, with two fantastic shows

Join in the fun with music and comedy this year, at the Baxter’s hugely popular New Year’s Eve Bash which will once again see some of the artists join in the festivities on 31 December. The fun will continue in the foyer after the performances to help kickstart the new year and herald in the new decade.

There are two fantastic shows to choose from, perfect for the festive season – Aunty Merle It’s a Girl! and Benny Bushwhacker: Human Nature. Performances on the night will commence later and ticket prices to both these shows include entry to the party, a complimentary glass of bubbly or orange juice, a live band and DJ as well as the traditional spectacular balloon drop. The live band will help to get the legs shaking and bodies grooving as the foyer fills with music and vibrant celebration.

Marc Lottering’s hit musical Aunty Merle It’s a Girl! and Ben Voss’ Bushwhacker: Human Nature, fresh from the veld to stage will have audiences in stitches.

Since its opening, Aunty Merle It’s a Girl! has been playing to packed houses and standing ovations at every performance so far. Marc once again teams up with director Lara Foot, a live band and an ensemble cast of 12, who sing and dance their way through the drama that goes on between Belgravia Road, Athlone and Bantry Bay.

The cast comprises Marc Lottering, Royston Stoffels, Carmen Maarman, Rushney Ferguson, Julian Place, Jennifer Steyn, Nicky Rebelo, Anzio September, Sizwesandile Mnisi, Tashreeq de Viliers, Zoleka Helesi and Crystal Finck.

The exciting sequel to the first hit production Aunty Merle, The Musical, brings even more surprises, with unexpected twists and turns, beautiful music and wonderful dancing.

Marianne Thamm from Daily Maverick said, “In a world filled with divisive rhetoric and anger Aunty Merle, It’s A Girl! reminds us that away from the screaming headlines of woe are the lives of ordinary people, our resilience and our ongoing journey towards self-healing and hope.”

Benny Bushwhacker: Human Nature, starring Ben Voss, directed by Janice Honeyman, is written by John van de Ruit (from the book and film Spud-fame). Get ready for a wander in the wild as this highly recommended comedy highlights the importance of nature conservation and man’s relationship with the environment. It opened at the 2019 National Arts Festival Makhanda (Grahamstown) where Ben won two Standard Bank Ovation Awards and has continued receiving rave reviews and full houses.

Veteran theatre critic Diane de Beer raved about Voss’ performance, ‘He is an extraordinary performer and just watching him perform, his skills, his attention to detail, his bravado and determination to hold everyone in that intimate theatre close while telling Bushwhacker’s story, is something to behold.’

Book for the New Year’s Eve Bash and choose between Marc Lottering’s Aunty Merle It’s a Girl! or Ben Voss’ Benny Bushwhacker: Human Nature at Webtickets on 086 111 0005 or online at www.webtickets.co.za

Kirstenbosch New Year’s Eve party goers in for a treat

Headlining the NYE festivities and Kirstenbosch veterans, Freshlyground, still hold the biggest show attendance record ever at Kirstenbosch. Add a bakkie full of awards, seven albums, multi-platinum sales and a most played song on radio in 2005 with “Doo Be Doo”, and Freshlyground is to SA what U2 is to Ireland. This is the band’s swansong gig together, which promises to be raw, nostalgic, intimate and emotional.

“This is our very last public performance before we go on an extended break. Our Kirstenbosch concerts have always been special and we’re proud to have forced a change in audience capacity allowances – all thanks to our phenomenal fan base! We’ve called Cape Town home, for almost 18 years and we regard our loyal, multi-generational following as our ‘extended family’. Performing here again ensures we continue the annual tradition of many families celebrating being Capetonian and South African, which makes it super special for us”, says Zolani, Freshlyground.

Fans can expect an epic and kaleidoscopic mix of Freshlyground’s folk, African pop, jazz, Indie and rock from all the band’s seven albums, marking 17 years of hit music-making.

The NYE opening acts are also sure to get your feet a-tapping and your limbs a-flailing with Cape Town’s Nomadic Orchestra, a five-piece instrumental brass band that pumps out infectious, super high-energy dance, gypsy and jazz beats. Regulars at music festivals across SA, the ‘Nomads’ are super-amped to help get Zolani’s farewell party started and #KBRocks fans a-rocking!

“We’re looking forward to bringing you a high energy and feel-good set that’s bound to get you off your picnic blanket and dancing your way into 2020!”, promises frontman Gabriel Du Toit, Nomadic Orchestra.

First up on stage is Native Young. Yannick Wilde, creator of the project, describes it as a “constantly evolving tapestry of culture, emotion and melody”. #KBRocks NYE party-goers can look forward to a magical fusion of anthemic uplifting vocals, Indie folk grooves and raw African rhythm. They’ll also be premiering their hot new single “Zola”.

Time to chill your champers and pack your picnic to party on the grass at #KBRocks New Year’s Eve! Gates open 19h00. Concert starts 20h30, ends 00h15. Tickets cost R435/p. Regret no free entry for children. Book now at: www.webtickets.co.za/Kirstenbosch-concerts.
