It’s that time of the year again – Spring! – and that means it is an ideal time for a complete clean up of makeup accessories from your closet. We might be all ready to get into the forthcoming warmer days and buy all the things on our spring wish list, but we would probably benefit from giving our wardrobe a complete overhaul.
Think of clearing your wardrobe as a fresh start; a chance to get rid of dull, boring winter blacks and grays and replace them in your hanging space with bright, breezy, pastel shades of new summer trends.
Firstly, before you start, get into the mood first; wear comfortable clothing, open the curtains and windows and let the sunshine come through. It will make you feel energized while you get rid of all the unwanted or unused clothing. This can be difficult as most times you may just love that scarf you bought three years ago; or that leather jacket that you worked so hard to pay off. Put on a brave face, get those boxes ready and start unpacking the wardrobe. Have four boxes ready: one for “the keepers”; one for charity; one for “fixing-up”; and lastly one for selling. Start with the basics – things you have not worn for at least two or three months. You will not miss it, right? So start putting these into a box. The hard part is sorting out the clothing, handbags and shoes. Unpack your entire closet. Start by creating piles of things you do not need, or want anymore. Remember to be ruthless; if you have not worn an item for six months or more, you will never wear it, so don’t keep it. When you have completed the piles, sort out what you would like to keep and place these back on the hanger. A tailored trousers or a classic white shirt is timeless, and can be worn on summer days too, so this can be kept. If you have one pair of black, navy and cream trousers, this should be enough. A good pair of well fitted jeans is all you need to carry you through the summer. Expensive branded items that are in great shape can be placed in the sell box. There are many thrift shops around and they will gladly pay you for your unwanted items, or keep them in their store until it is sold. Once you have organized what you want to keep, start by placing all your winter warmies at the back of the closet; boots should go at the bottom of the shoe rack. Hang your clothes by type that is shirts, dresses, skirts and pants.
Once you have packed all your wants, box all the rest of the items that need to be taken away. Once the boxes are sealed, DO NOT open them again. All empty hangers can be donated to your local laundry store. Freshen your closet with a spray of lavender, or hang citrus or lavender linen bags in between your clothes. Pat yourself on the back; you have done your spring cleaning of your closet.
