Your old man deserves more than a cheesy card and a pair of socks so this Father’s Day — Sunday, June 16 — why not try something a little different. Show him your appreciation by treating him to a day at Spier. Kick off with sampling their accoladed wines in the cosy Tasting Room. Then for lunch, feast on farm-to-table dishes at Eight, or tuck into a tasty spit-braai at Spier Hotel.
A treat at the Tasting Room
As a tribute to awesome dads everywhere, this Father’s Day the Tasting Room is offering those who choose the Winemaker Selection Tasting the opportunity to taste the Frans K. Smit Red Blend too. Named after acclaimed Cellar Master — himself a dad — this is Spier’s flagship: a wine handcrafted in limited quantities which few people ever get the chance to taste. In addition to Frans K. Smit, the Winemaker Selection also features its normal line-up: a sampling of Spier’s two award-winning premium ranges (Creative Block and 21 Gables) as well as the premium organic red wine, First Stone. Feeling peckish while you taste? The Tasting Room offers delicious cheese and charcuterie platters to snack on while you sip.
When: Sunday, June, 16, 9am to 4.30pm (no need to book)
Cost: R90 per person
A spit-braai fit for a king
Tell Dad to hang up the tongs – on this day of all days, he deserves the afternoon off – and treat him to the Hotel Restaurant’s spit-braai instead. A slowly spit-roasted, incredibly tender Karoo lamb will be taking centre stage — but plenty of other delicious dishes from the braai deserve the limelight too: Farmer Angus pork spare ribs, fire-roasted corn cobs, mushroom risotto, chicken lollipops and more. These will be accompanied by a bounty of seasonal, just-picked salad. Be sure to save space for the decadent desserts.
Where: Spier Hotel Restaurant
Cost: R350 per person; R160 per child under 12
A farm-to-table meat feast at Eight
Dad better come hungry to Eight Restaurant’s Father’s Day feast. It will feature an entire suckling pig, reared at Spier by Farmer Angus, a spatchcock chicken and organic Karoo lamb — all braaied to tender perfection. There’s plenty more too: charcuterie, biltong salad, and vegetable crudités to start. And then, from the coals, butternut, grilled veg and smoked mussel and bacon potjie. All in all, a bounty of dishes that are truly fresh, seasonal, local —made with ingredients sourced from Spier farm, as well as trusted nearby farmers. Dad’s going to love the old school desserts — sticky toffee pudding and lemon meringue.
Cost: R480 per adult; R200 per child under 12
