The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra will be back at the atmospheric Maynardville Open-Air Festival in January, performing a selection of some of the most equally atmospheric incidental music ever written.
‘Famously Incidental’, which will be performed on three midsummer nights – from January 17 to 19, at 8.15pm nightly – focuses on music written to accompany and enhance drama or film. The concerts are part of the festival of classics, ballet, comedy, Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’ and more.
Brandon Phillips, resident conductor of the CPO, will induce the mood while radio luminary and classical buff Rodney Trudgeon will guide audiences entertainingly through the pieces. The pieces all have a story and Trudgeon has researched them convincingly.
For Trudgeon, being involved in the Maynardville Open-Air Festival for the second time is a real pleasure.
“It’s amazing how the written word has influenced so many great composers to write truly amazing music,” he says.
‘Famously Incidental’ will include Mendelssohn’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and Schubert’s ‘Rosamunde’ overture, which was probably not written for the play. but for an opera called ‘Die Zauberharfe’ (The Magic Harp) and less famous than ‘Rosamunde’. Also on the programme are other gems like Beethoven’s overture to ‘Egmont’, which he wrote to accompany the play by Goethe, and the Waltz from Khatchaturian’s ‘Masquerade’, the play by Mikhael Lermontov. Then there are three movements from Lt Kijé Suite, Prokofiev’s first attempt at film scoring and for the silent film of the same name in the early 1930s; Farandole from the L’Arlésienne Suite, music written by Bizet to accompany Alphonse Daudet’s play of the same name; and the Peer Gynt Suite, written by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg to accompany Henrik Ibsen’s play, Peer Gynt, naturally.
