On October 23, 2018, a raging fire razed to ashes the homes of hundreds of people living in the SST informal settlement of Town Two, Khayelitsha. A lot of people lost their valuables in the fire, as they woke to the smell of smoke permeating the air. Relief efforts were mounted to assist and local communities acted in kind.
African Tales in partnership with NuHome Entertainment and in conjunction with Jobela Bus Tours (a local bus company in Khayelitsha) and DCAS will present a show on December 7 at Kilombo Village (Way of Life Church, located at 1 Joe Modise Street, Makhaya, Khayelitsha) to raise funds to assist the families who fell victim to the fire on October 23. The main focus is on the children who will be going back to school come January 2019. They will need a lot of items, from stationery and school uniforms to backpacks.
Mr. Vokovi, a long-time resident of Town Two, has been hosting comedy shows for the last four years, having started as a comedian himself back in 2010 at the Vodacom Funny Festival. He has had support from residents in Town Two who have attended his shows, which he hosted at Lookout Hill Tourism Centre. By doing this show and donating to help those in need, he is “paying it forward”. He has expressed hope and wishes that the community of Khayelitsha and beyond will answer the call and fill up the venue on the day of the event.
The shows will take place from 7pm to 11pm, with four comedians, a magician and two musicians providing the entertainment on the night, including:
- Magician Mawonga Gayiya
- Ayanda “Aylo” Tywaku, a musician and producer, who will be serenading the audience with his smooth sounds
- Ntshebe, a comedian hailing all the way from KZN, who is sure to have audience members rolling down the isles
