Doctors and dentists by day, pianists by night…24 of these top amateur pianists are converging on Cape Town to celebrate 10 years of Les Amateurs Virtuoses Piano Festival. The festival takes place from November 10 to 18, culminating in a concert with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
This unique festival which provides performance opportunities for pianists who, had they chosen too, could have been professional, has been travelling the world for the last 10 years.
Events start on the 10th with a grand opening concert in the Baxter Concert Hall, featuring 40 learners from Muzukids and pianists performing Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures’ at an Exhibition. On Sunday the 11th proceedings move over to the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch for a masterclass and afternoon concert; further concerts take place from Monday to Friday each night at 7.30pm at the Baxter.
Masterclasses will be presented by Albie van Schalkwyk, Francois du Toit and Jan Hugo from SA, Philip Fowke from the UK and Jay Gottlieb from America. On Saturday the 17th the Festival will take an afternoon concert to Guga S’thebe in Langa.
