1000Women1Voice luncheon

Wheat Trust Luncheon

Selfies with the words #Enoughisenough written on the palm of their hands and portrayed on the profile page on Facebook, have formed part of women-led organizations’ campaign to network and actively mobilize against domestic violence in South Africa. It will all culminate at the flagship women’s event, the 1000 Women unite against Domestic initiative, on Thursday, May 10.

The D-day for the selfies to be portrayed on their profile page in Facebook was on Freedom Day, April 27, and the message was meant to be a collective outcry, stating: “Enough is Enough, Freedom from domestic abuse, Freedom from rape and freedom of speech.”

Businesses or individuals were invited to network on social media with their selfies stating #enoughisenough written on the palm of their hands.

Women-led organizations in South Africa estimate that a woman is raped every 26 seconds and that one out of every four women is involved in an abusive relationship. 1000women1voice financially assists women’s shelters and counselling services for those who have suffered abuse and rape.

Karin Schermbrucker, co-founder of the production-company Slingshot media and well-known photographer who work consistently with UNICEF and UN Women, will deliver the keynote address on May 10.

Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp, currently hosting the kykNET hit show ‘Parlement Parlement’, will be the master of ceremonies at the 1000Women1Voice lunch.

Jimmy Nevis at Shimmy Beach

Jimmy Nevis at Shimmy Beach

Get up close and personal with your favourite musicians this winter with Shimmy Acoustic Sessions, an intimate music and food affair that kicks off on Thursday, May 31, with the first edition featuring Cape Town born singer/songwriter, Jimmy Nevis.

The artist is famous for his catchy melodies, acoustic tones and memorable lyrics that took songs like ‘Heartboxing’, ‘Elephant Shoes’ and ‘In Love With You’ high up on to the charts as hit singles with significant airplay for such a young local artist.

Shimmy Acoustic Sessions is your opportunity to experience Nevis’s music in its rawest, purest form in the warm, inviting atmosphere of the indoor Shimmy Beach Club restaurant.

With a selection of winter warmer canapés, bowls and finger foods (including dessert) to enjoy throughout the evening, a welcome drink on arrival and a setting that combines cosiness with floor to ceiling ocean views, Shimmy Beach Club has concocted an idyllic recipe to soothe the soul and abolish those winter blues.

Tickets are R350pp and include canapés, a welcome drink and the hour-long live performance. Arrival is 6pm for 6.30pm. The performance will start at 7pm and end at 9pm. Bookings can be made by emailing admin@shimmybeachclub.co.za.
