In a first for the GrandWest Open Mic Jazz singing competition, now in its ninth year, the seven finalists were all girls. Following a spectacular show of vocal talent at the final event on Wednesday, 20 September 2017, it was Ruby Truter from Belhar, who emerged victorious from the top seven. She took home a prize package worth over R93 000.

Included in the package is R35 000 in cash from GrandWest, a demo recording with Nuthouse Studios, career mentoring with Bev Scott-Brown from Spotlight Music, vocal training lessons with Kim Kallie Performance Academy, a Beta-87C Microphone from Wild & Marr, a live performance at The Crypt, accommodation on the Love Jazz Cruise 2018, a live performance Jazz on the Rocks 2018, two tickets to Cape Music Exchange Conference 2018, a professional portfolio from Steven Booth Photography and a two night stay at the Grand Hotel, GrandWest.

Commenting on the 2017 competition, Elouise Matthys, PR and Promotions Manager at GrandWest, says: “This year’s GrandWest Open Mic Jazz singing competition has indeed been one of the most exciting in its nine year history. The calibre of entrants was exceptionally high, making competition stiff. While we certainly enjoyed tremendous performances by male participants, the top seven girls really shone.

“As expected, the finale was dazzling, with all of the finalists giving it their all. Our judging panel had an especially tough task deciding on the top three. We extend heartfelt congratulations to our top three and thank all of our competitors for making the competition such a wonderful and captivating success.”

GrandWest and Heart 104.9FM have presented the Open Mic Jazz singing competition for the past nine years to give emerging jazz entertainers a platform to showcase their talent. For all contestants it is a great opportunity to shine on stage before a live audience and assess themselves against other performers.
