The second season of 2017 of the Cape Town Concert Series will open, on Saturday, August 19, at the Baxter Concert Hall at 8 pm with a concert and Milonga (live dancing) by the SAMA nominated Cape Town Tango Ensemble. This follows its popular appearance on the same series a couple of years ago.
The ensemble, established twenty years ago, comprises founder Stanislav Anguelov (Bandoneon), Albert Combrink (Piano), Petrus de Beer (Violin) and Charles Lazar (Double Bass). The group will play a programme of virtuosic chamber music from the tango repertoire. Cornerstones of the Piazzolla canon will be interspersed with French and Eastern European concert tangos, as well as first performances of new works by members of the ensemble itself. The ensemble has delighted classical audiences with its performances of the art-music of this genre, as far afield as Berlin, Singapore and the Leipzig Gewandhaus. To demonstrate to the physical dance aspect of tango, the recital will be followed by live dancing at a Milonga in the foyer, celebrating the Baxter’s 40th year on a suitably festive note.
CT Tango Ensemble has worked with international tango singers such as Adriana Edwards, Juan Simon and Gustavo Fasani, as well as mezzo-soprano Violina Anguelov, one of South Africa’s most popular opera singers.
* Tickets are R180/R150 for senior citizens, available from Computicket.
