For the fourth year running Woman Zone is part of the Artscape Woman’s Humanity Arts Festival (AWHAF). There a number of projects affiliated with Woman Zone this year – all of them free and all designed to bring together the women of Cape Town. And with this year’s theme – Uniting Cape Town Against Gender Violence – it is hoped that the city’s men will come on board too.
Some of the events include:
- Women’s Humanity Walk
Woman’s Day, Wednesday, August 9
SAFFI (South African Faith and Family Institute) and Woman Zone partner with Artscape to start the annual Women’s Humanity Walk at St George’s Cathedral from 9am, proceeding down to the Artscape Theatre Complex. The theme this year Uniting Cape Town Against Gender Based Violence means men and children are especially welcome to join in with banners and placards. Gathering promptly at 9am, guest speakers and multi-denominational faith leaders’ blessings will precede the Walk, which will set off at 9.30am. The Walk is an opportunity to chat to people you don’t know and discuss ways to stop the scourge of gender violence. CEO of Artscape, Marlene le Roux will lead the way in an MLT sponsored vehicle.
Woman Zone’s Story Café and panel discussion on Women and their Books
Tuesday, August 8, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at Woman Zone’s Library, Ground Floor
Talking books is a favourite pastime at the regular Story Café events. On August 8 author of ‘An A to Z of Amazing South African Women’, Ambre Nicolson, and her publisher Colleen Higgs of Modjaji books (who celebrates 10 years of publishing women this year) will shed light on the stories behind the stories of the “amazing” women in this book.
Maxine Case will talk about her new book ‘Softness of the Lime’ and the background to this tale of passion and integrity, love and betrayal in the time of slavery.
Thobeka Yose, newcomer to the literary scene, will share her own story which she tells with honesty, courage and hope in her self-published book ‘In silence’.
Entry is free and authors will speak about their works and take questions.
- The Everywoman Project
Saturday, August 5, from 10am to 4pm, Chandelier Foyer, Artscape
Over the last few months Woman Zone has held a number of workshops bringing women from different communities together to make shweshwe ‘yoyos’. The goal is to turn them into a one big textile artwork that will eventually be on display at Artscape.
Women of Cape Town are invited to be a part of The Everywoman Project by joining the mass ‘sew-in’. All are welcome, sewers and non-sewers alike, to help bring this collaborative project to life.
