Bands and choirs to delight Artscape Theatre festive season patrons

Artscape Theatre is gearing up to enhance this year’s festive season mood by hosting various Cape Town based choirs and bands. These free performances will be staged on the piazza for the patrons’ delight prior to the scheduled theatre productions tonight, December 16, 22, 24 and 31 at 6pm.

The jam-packed piazza festive season programme will kick off with a highly entertaining performance by the Khayelitsha based United Choral Artists, a non-governmental organisation that has performed at various festivals such as the Old Mutual National Choir Festival using choral music as a vehicle to advance humanity and eradicate alcohol abuse, drugs and crime.

On December 22, The Institute for Music and Indigenous Arts Development will stage a lightening performance by the “Little Giants”, an Afro/Jazz youth Big Band established in 1999 by local jazz icons, Ezra Ngcukana and George Werner at the request of the of the Annual Jazzathon Festival. The band is made of musicians aged 15 – 21 years from the townships of the Cape Flats and beyond and has performed at major festivals and jazz clubs such as The Cape Town International Jazz Festival and The Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival in Grahamstown amongst others. In 2006, the band released their debut CD “Ungalibali” which featured 8 of their compositions.

On Christmas Eve, theatre patrons will witness a lively performance by the Perseverance Christmas Band. Established in 1969, its primary focus is on the development of music in the immediate community of Elsies River. To date, over 500 learners have been registered with the music teaching programme and that has greatly benefited churches and other Christmas bands.

New Year’s Eve sees the finale of the season as the Salt River based, Boarding Boys Sporting Club, the second eldest affiliate of Cape Malay Choir Board sings out the old year with their 80 member choir.
