The legendary Dr Rebecca Malope will perform her life story in the nostalgic musical showcase, ‘Angingedwa: This Is My Story’, at Carnival City this weekend. The theatre production, produced by Artistry Talent Management, showcases the original autobiography of Malope through acting, singing and dancing. The inaugural show takes place in the Big Top Arena on Saturtday, December 3, with the greater vision being to take the show on tour across at least five South African provinces in 2017. The show will include surprise guest performances by people Malope has worked with over the past 30 years and a cast filled with talented performers.
Malope has been in the industry as a musician since 1986 and 2016 marks her 30th year as a performing artist. Throughout her 30 year career span she has won numerous national and international awards, released 35 successful gospel albums, been the highest selling female artist in South Africa, received an honorary doctorate as a spiritual healer, performed all over the world and been dubbed the “Queen Of Gospel”.
Despite all of her accomplishments and accolades, her life story has not been all gold and glitter. It is one filled with “tremendous heartaches and struggles.” It is a story of resilience, determination and a true test of faith. This is the tale that will be turned into a musical on December 3.
“I am looking forward to presenting a performance I have never done before and taking the audience on a journey of my life through music. From being a little girl in a rural township called Lekazi, going to school on an empty stomach and without shoes, dropping out of school, living in a child headed household without my parents at age 10 and then hiking 400km from home to Evaton in pursuit of my dreams. I want to tell it all,” says Malope.
According to Noluthando Malope, Managing Director or Artistry Talent Management, the musical also provides a platform for Malope to unearth and mentor young talent. Auditions were held over four days to discover fresh talent for the musical. Hundreds of hopefuls flocked to the auditions to showcase their triple-threat performance capabilities and prove they could act, dance and sing their hearts out in an effort to become the final cast members who will carry the large responsibility of telling Malope’s tale.
Tickets are available at Computicket and range in price from R200 per person.
