Inspired by the music on his latest album, ‘Beautiful Beautiful Hymns’, popular pianist Rocco de Villiers will present his new show that played to capacity houses in Johannesburg over Easter at Theatre On The Bay in Camps Bay for six performances only, from Tuesday, November 29, to Saturday, December 3.
“This compilation is much more than a gospel album. This selection is a celebration of praise, rejoicing and understanding faith through music and of course, beauty. All these melodies have stood the test of time and move me in indescribable ways. This is music for the heart and soul in a time where the world is desperate for grace,” says De Villiers about the collection of songs that he will be playing live on stage.
Included in the nightly programme are such classic as ‘Abide With Me’, ‘The Holy City’, ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Ave Maria’, ‘Glory Glory Hallelujah’, ‘How Great Though Art’, ‘Holy Holy Holy’, ‘O Holy Night’, ‘Onward Christian Solders’ and ‘Silent Night’.
Joining De Villiers on stage to celebrate this trove of musical treasures are bagpipe player Piperjames, organist Pieter van den Berg and violinist Lizelle le Roux.
Famed for his unconventional style and penchant for the dramatic, audiences can expect powerful, bold images from De Villiers in his staging of ‘Amazing Grace’.
De Villiers’ musical “powers” first manifested when he was four years old. “I was bored and asked the garden man to break the lock of our upright piano. And when I saw a poster of actress Vena Naude, who came to my hometown Harrismith to do a show, ‘Shakespeare in Afrikaans’…well, the rest as they say, is history,” De Villiers told The Next 48hOURS.
Performances are at 8pm nightly, with an extra matinee scheduled for 6pm on Saturday, December 3.
Tickets priced between R100 and R180 can be booked at Computicket.
