This year the Bryanston Organic & Natural Market celebrates its 40th birthday, with the month of October filled with informative talks, demonstrations, special offers, customer treats and children’s activities, and culminating in a Spring fashion show that showcases the new season’s designs. (Details of the month’s activities are available at www.bryanstonorganicmarket.co.za.)
It was in 1976, in an effort to raise funds for Michael Mount Waldorf School, when a group of parents started bringing their organically grown fruit and vegetables from their gardens to sell to other parents.
To increase sales, they ventured out onto the pavement waving bunches of carrots at passing cars. As a movement towards healthy eating and conscious living, the market quickly grew to include a variety of artists and crafters. From these humble beginnings, Johannesburg’s first outdoor market was born. Two devastating fires gutted the market. The first in 1988 and the second twenty years later in 2008, but the spirit of the market could not be vanquished and each time it arose from the ashes stronger than before.
The Bryanston Organic & Natural Market has grown into a place of relaxed enjoyment for the whole family. There are more than 130 stallholders offering a tempting array of light meals and refreshments, a wide selection of organic fresh produce, delicatessen treats, breads and bakes, arts, crafts, toys, clothing, accessories, jewellery, curios and collectables, décor, homeware, health and wellness products and one-of-a-kind gifts, handcrafted from natural materials. It is a registered fundraising trust for the Michael Mount Waldorf School and all profits of the market go towards the development of the school and the international system of Waldorf education.
