Family friendly horseracing fun to kick off Summer of Champions

Warmer days are upon us in the Western Cape and so is the Cape’s Summer of Champions feature season.
The glittering season gets underway with the running of the Matchem Stakes, a Grade 3 event over 1400m, at Durbanville on Sunday, October 9, and the country course is set to host a fantastic day with the event offering something for the whole family.

The Matchem Stakes, which dates back to 1958, historically provides key pointers to the rest of the summer season and boasts an illustrious list of past winners, including the likes of Variety Club, Capetown Noir and prominent sire Captain Al.

Last year’s renewal of the R250000 contest went to short-priced favourite Act of War, who won by 1.50 lengths under top weight of 60kg.
Offerings at this year’s event include children’s entertainment, a food village, offering scrumptious food and a selection of craft beers on sale.
Another highlight will be the Jockeys’ Chase with defending champion Aldo Domeyer putting his title on the line in the 400m dash, which sees the riders sprint down the track as part of a drive to raise funds for the Western Cape Equine Trust.
Domeyer will have to fend off challenges from 16 of his colleagues including Grant van Niekerk, Corne Orffer, Donovan Dillon, Lucien Africa and Robert Kathi.

Entrance to Durbanville on the day is free and gates open at 11am.
