Artscape will celebrate their heritage with a Lunch Hour Concert on Thursday, September 8, at 1pm. The Jazzart Dance Theatre Company and the Unmute Dance Company will showcase their work at this concert.
Jazzart will present four works at the Lunch Hour Concert, which include extracts from their June 2016 season, ‘InMotion’ and the upcoming September 2016 season called ‘Injabulo’. Audiences will also get to experience a sneak preview of the collaborative production with Unmute Dance Company, which forms part of the September season.
Opening the concert, Jazzart second-year trainees will perform two works: ‘Mending’, choreographed by Mziyanda Mancam, which explores and celebrates our youth’s quest for happiness, while overcoming life’s many challenges; and ‘Ayashisa Amateki’, a pantsula piece choreographed by Duncan Maphanga and telling a story of the ghetto.
Jazzart’s professional dancers will be performing two pieces in collaboration with the ground-breaking Unmute Dance Company. First up is ‘Ufundo’, meaning “in a process of learning”. This is an uplifting and empowering work that explores sign dance – the use of sign language as a new dance form – and deconstructs what society perceives as dance. ‘Reservations’, choreographed by Sifiso Kweyama, portrays the negotiation process of love and how forgiveness creates a positive way forward to understanding each other.
Unmute Dance Company will be performing a reworked piece, ‘February’, a duet that has been choreographed by Yaseen Manuel. This piece explores the empty spaces which were once filled.
* Tickets are available from Computicket or Artscape Dial-A-Seat on 021 421 7695.
