Auriol Hays has just released her new album, entitled ‘Dreaming Music’, filled with thought provoking lyrics and introspection coupled with lush arrangements and her signature vocal style.
We chatted to this stylish and much celebrated singer as we celebrate the start of women’s month.
How are you?
For the most part I am well, evened out.
Putting out the fire with gasoline
Always! Gives me something to write and sing about after all.
Any Scary Monsters?
I think some of the men I have met could be qualified as such…
Can you be a Hero for just one Day?
Why would I want to do that? Being a mother, sister and singer is more than enough for me
Life on Mars?
I would hope not. Just watching our politicians is worrying enough.
Its your round what are you drinking?
Either rum, when with friends; or whiskey, when alone.
The song you wished you wrote?
‘Solid Ground’ by Alex Vargas.
Dream gig to do?
I will tell you once it happens. Obviously sharing a stage or studio with Ben Harper is right at the top of the list. But most cool gigs are only cool after the fact; after I have performed. Anyhow, I like being surprised by musicians and things that pop up in my career. Music tends to work like that for me.
What makes you stand out?
I think that is an arrogant question to answer.
Orrie-Borrie is what my granny called me. Most people stick to my name though.
If you were not a musician, what would you do?
A writer. A hermit. A cat. Or a mermaid.
Pick five words to describe your band?
Well, they call themselves The Saints. If I had to choose five words to describe the boys in my band it would be: Passionate, professional, wonderful church boys.
Desert Island Discs?
Radiohead’s ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’
Skunk Anansie’s ‘Anarchytecture’
Ben Harper’s ‘Give Till It’s Gone’
Kanye West’s ‘Yeezus’
Black Keys’ ‘Turn Blue’
Greatest Movie Ever Made?
In truth I am a TV series junkie.
Who do you love?
At the moment, my daughter, my sister and Ben Harper.
This can change at any moment!
What do you complain about most often?
My official policy is this – life is too short for bad food, bad music and bad men.
What is your fear?
Being without the people I love
Listening to my daughter tell a dirty joke, or driving as she plays music.
Rehearsals with my band and falling asleep at my sister’s house while the kids make a racket
On stage I tend to?
Almost trip over my dress. I blame my parents for my poor genetics. I refuse to wear high heels. Unless I am going on a seriously hot date.
What are you doing next?
Aside from anything that interests me, I am about to launch my new music video ‘Constellations of Desire’, followed by my album and on August 6 will have a show at the Rockwell Theatre.
