Set in a high security prison in South Africa, the play turned musical, ‘The Antidote’, will return to the Joburg Theatre from Tuesday, June 28, to July 3.
It will be back at the Fringe, Joburg Theatre, to challenge the issue of prisons either serving their purpose of being correctional facilities for the state or becoming gangster havens for more crimes.
The piece creates a controversial debate while exploring the high amount of crime in and outside South African prisons.
This loud and explosive piece of theatre pushes its audiences to engage critically and intellectually into the hearts of these convicts’ stories. It follows the concealed testing of an experimental drug on convicts to reduce aggression, which backfires as prisoners start losing their minds. The system coupled by the side effects reduces prisoners to the level of animals through graphic descriptions, portrayals of violence and rape.
Adding a melodious dimension to the play, the ensemble cast performs haunting songs that are mournful and angry. The show is presented by DNA and Joburg Theatre’s Youth development graduates of 2015.
The production showcased at the National Arts Festival in 2014.
