‘O sweet Mr Shakespeare’ celebrates 400 years of theatrical magic

Impresario extraordinaire Pieter Toerien will be presenting The London Shakespeare Group in ‘O sweet Mr Shakespeare’, a celebration of a life’s work and a 400-year legacy, at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre until Sunday, February 21.

400 years after his death, Shakespeare is performed more and more and is loved throughout the world. He is regarded as one of Britain’s greatest exports. ‘Sweet Mr Shakespeare’ examines the reactions to him over the centuries and enacts great passages from his comedies, tragedies and histories.
The show features a cast of West End actors the like of Andrew Wincott, Delena Kidd, Frank Barrie and Emily Raymond honouring the Bard’s hallowed words.

Kidd last appeared at Theatre on the Bay in the 2012 production of Sir Ronald Harwood’s play ‘Quartet’ and in 2014 in Richard Everett’s ‘Entertaining Angels’.
Her daughter, Emily Raymond (who is married to fellow English actor, Ben Miles) joins her on stage in South Africa for the second time.

Rounding out the cast is British stage, radio and video game actor, Andrew Wincott and stage and television actor, Frank Barrie, who had a world record of 12 consecutive standing ovations at the Brisbane Twelfth Night Theatre in 1982 for his self-penned ‘Macready’ and has most recently appeared in the BBC’s ‘EastEnders’.
‘Sweet Mr Shakespeare’ recounts stories of Shakespeare’s life and times and includes seven scenes from his tragedies and comedies including ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’, ‘As You Like It’, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Macbeth’.
Shakespeare fans can look forward to a fascinating mix of life and art, readings, anecdotes and yarns.

* Performances are taking place nightly at 8pm until Saturday, and at 2pm on Sunday.
