La Bohème means “The Bohemians” and District Six was well known for its Bohemian atmosphere; a place where South African artists of all colours and religions could mix freely to share ideas and grow a collective culture in opposition to the Apartheid regime. It is well documented that artistic enclaves contribute to a diverse culture of understanding, whether set in a Paris garret like the original La Bohème or in District Six before the removals.
‘La Bohème in District Six’ will set forth to honour and celebrate the heritage of this important South African space and era through the lens of a classic opera storyline.
