Mad Hatter of hypnotists back at Montecasino

Andre the Hilarious Hypnotist returns to the Montecasino Theatre stage to enthral local fans with his wit, dry humour and ability to turn even the most innocent of audience members into anything from a washing machine to Superman, providing an ideal way to chase away the New Year blues.
The performer’s season at the Montecasino Theatre officially kicks off on Friday, January 22, running for a limited season until Sunday, February 14.
There are also four preview performances taking place this weekend – from Friday to Sunday, January 15 to 17.

PETER TROMP caught up with the showman.

The Mad Hatter of hypnotists.

When did you first become aware of your “powers”?
Sadly the only power I was born with was the ability to never stop talking. Hypnosis is a learned skill that anybody can acquire. Stage hypnotist is another “power” all of its own.

Your biggest inspiration in life…
The legendary Max Collie, the instant inspiration that led me away from teaching and into the world of stage hypnosis.

The most nervous you’ve ever been on stage…
I performed at a Youth Day rally a few years ago. For reasons unbeknownst to me I was the only white person at the event. The first performer managed to whip up the crowd as he marched through the history of apartheid. As he approached the end of a now very emotionally charged presentation, with everybody singing and shouting he loudly, he announced that this was the “last time the white Afrikaans speaking person dominated this country”, and there I stood; a White Afrikaans speaking hypnotist whose sole aim was to make people act in strange ways while I controlled them.

“Last night a show changed my life.” Which show?
Nataniël. We have one artist with the skill, creativity and the ability to remove you from reality while suspending disbelief and he is Nataniël.

If you could be anyone else for 24 hours…
Wow. I would stand firm in my own two shoes. I would hate to walk in any other person’s shoes, even if it was for only 24 hours.

Drinks are on us. What are you having?
Ice tea. (Might want to skip drinks and go straight to dessert.)

Easiest way to your heart…
I have been single for ten years. How I wish I could find the person who solves the riddle and finds the route into my heart.

Favourite place in the world…
San Francisco. It’s Cape Town, but in dollars.

Book(s) and/or movie(s) you can read/watch over and over again.
‘Titanic’ (the Extended Edition and 3D Edition and Deleted Scenes Edition);
‘Moulin Rouge’ – one can only dream;
‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’ – proof that no family is ever normal.

You’ve been reincarnated as a pizza…which toppings should we expect?
It’s mass overload complexity in bucket loads. Banana for flavour; avo for fun; chilli for a very dry, yet sharp sense of humour; olives for an expensive taste; cheese as a teaser of what’s to come; and garlic to remember me by.
