mother city fine dining
Review by Bianca Coleman
You can’t walk more than a few metres at the V&A Waterfront without finding somewhere to eat. There are more than 80 restaurants, from almost fine dining to fast food, as well as the Market On The Wharf, and the surrounding five star hotels. Every taste and budget is catered for, whether you want ice cream on the go or sushi and champagne with a view of the harbour.
In the Watershed – home to more than 150 tenants who sell everything from ceramics and furniture to textiles, fashion and jewellery, mainly catering to the foreign tourist market – you’ll find a fairly new addition which opened a few months ago. Cooked is a small café on the ground floor where food is ordered and served through the windows. You can eat at one of the handful of tables in the small seating area, or grab a take away. The vibe is clean, verging on industrial within this warehouse space, but there are large and very beautiful chandeliers overhead.
The small chalkboard menu focuses on flavours of the Middle East, Mediterranean and a contemporary twist on Africa.
There are baguettes and wraps, potato latkes, and khoubiz flat breads with various toppings and fillings. In addition there are daily specials like pies and soup of the day. Examples of the dishes are on display, and when you order yours will be prepared for you.
My friend had the bean stew, while I had the slow cooked lamb wrapped inside a flat bread. Served simply on brightly coloured plastic plates, both were enjoyable. There is no liquor licence, so you’ll have to make do with soft drinks, tea and coffee.
You can get a breakfast latke or khoubiz with or without bacon. Other options include smoked salmon, BBQ chicken, hummus and roast vegetables, or good old cheese and tomato. The food is light, fresh and tasty but do keep space for a little something sweet at the end. The almond cake served with cream was divine. Cooked makes plenty of delicious sweet breads and pastries, and baked cheesecake.
