Racing, rugby and prawns in the Highveld

The Supreme Cup meeting sponsored by SAP and taking place at the Vaal racecourse this Saturday, September 26, is Vereeniging’s biggest social day and one of the Highveld’s best family days out.

It is a not to be missed meeting and great news is that alongside all the fine fare and other entertainment the rugby World Cup will be shown live on the big screen. On the day Samoa will be the targets of the famed Springbok backlash.

The day will feature one of South African racing’s renowned prawn festivals. A supply of tons of succulent prawns will be on sale at R70 per 1/2kg and will be accompanied by chips or rice and a flavour choice of peri-peri, lemon butter or garlic butter.

There are also still a few of the popular braai and picnic sites available. Ten people is the maximum allowed per braai site, but this includes the infrastructure and a fully prepared braai menu, chicken, steak and wors, plus pap and sauce and salads. The price per site of R2650 excludes drinks but there is a cash bar available.

The self-catering braai sites allow a maximum of 20 per site. Tables chairs and linen will be provided and there will be access to the braai area, but guests must bring their own food and beverages. (To book one of these popular spots call 011 681 1701.)

The Kids always get lost in the myriad of free on course entertainment provided. There will also be a craft market and plenty of live entertainment between races. It is truly a family day out to remember.

The racing, all on the sand on the day, will be of top quality and patrons can also make a weekend of it, because there is a curtain raiser turf meeting to be held at the same venue on Thursday, September 24. The R1 million Supreme Cup, the biggest sand race in the country, will have added tension this year because World Sports Betting have offered a R100000 bonus to any horse that can win both the World Sports Betting August Stakes over 1200m and the Supreme Cup.

The Stephen Moffat-trained Roman Carnival stands to win the R100000 bonus, having obliterated the field in the August Stakes. Besides the Supreme Cup sponsored by SAP, other racing highlights of the day will be the Listed Hampton Handicap over 1000m, the Listed Banyana Handicap over 1000m, the Listed Supreme Fillies and Mares Stakes over 1450m, the Non-Black Type Vaal River Handicap over 1800m, the Non-Black Type Sophomore 1000 and the Non-Black Type Sophomore Fillies 1000.
