Raising the flag for big Bok send-off

As rugby fever mounts around the world, the Springboks are gearing up for their departure on Friday, September 11, and Tsogo Sun is inviting Gauteng residents to come and show their support at the official Springboks send-off at Montecasino.

As part of their Springbok supporter campaign, Tsogo Sun this week raised a giant 13m x 6.5m flag made up of 109 ribbons, each of which is 20m in length, containing messages of support from Springbok fans. The ribbons have been sewn together to form the flag which can now be seen outside Montecasino on the corner of Witkoppen and William Nicol roads.

“This proud Tsogo Sun ‘Fly the flag’ campaign is a loud and clear message to our Springbok team that the nation is wholeheartedly behind them throughout the Rugby World Cup,” says Neil Fraser, Tsogo Sun Group Sales Director. For several weeks, the ribbon boxes have been positioned at selected Tsogo Sun properties for supporters to write their own messages on. “The response from Springbok supporters throughout South Africa has been overwhelming and truly heart-warming. We were delighted to give so many people the chance to share their personal messages of support and encouragement,” he adds.

Gauteng residents can come and show their support of the Boks in person at the official Springbok send-off ceremony, commencing at 3pm at Montecasino’s Outdoor Piazza on Friday, September 11. The ceremony will feature interviews with the Springboks in a live SuperSport broadcast, live music entertainment from 2pm, opportunities for supporters to be chosen for a photo session with the team, and much more Springbok supporter entertainment, before the team leaves for the airport at 5pm. Entry is on a first-come-first-served basis. Guests are invited to use the hashtag #BokSupport to show their support of the Boks at the official send-off.

Glenn Joseph, GM of Montecasino, is delighted that the precinct has been given the opportunity to fly the flag and host the big send-off party for the Springboks. “Montecasino has a long-running affiliation with the Springboks. We’re strong supporters and the home of South Africa’s first Absa Boktown, which has seen thousands of fans enjoy Springbok moments for many years. We’re extremely proud to show the Springboks what their passionate and powerful efforts on the field mean to millions of South Africans. We wish them the best of luck as they set off to achieve big things in England.”

Tsogo Sun has a 20-year relationship with SA Rugby dating back to the 1995 Rugby World Cup when Tsogo Sun was appointed the official and exclusive hotel group for the event. Subsequent to the RWC, a partnership agreement was entered into with SA Rugby, and Tsogo Sun has been their official accommodation partner ever since. This partnership with SA Rugby also gives Tsogo Sun exclusive rights to host Boktown – the Springbok Supporters Village – at its Montecasino, Silverstar and Suncoast properties. This year three more Tsogo Sun properties have been confirmed as additional official Boktown venues – Gold Reef City, Emnotweni in Nelspruit, and the Ridge in Emalahleni – for the Rugby World Cup.
