The issue of laptop graphics has been a major challenge for many manufacturers and has racked up quite a bit of debate in online forums. The challenge has always been to make a Graphics Processing Unit that is efficient, yet stands up to its Desktop PC versions. NVIDIA has been the forerunner in this quest and has released Graphics Processing Units (GPU) that offered gamers a chance to really push the capabilities of their laptop computers. NVIDIA recently unveiled their latest GPU for Laptops called the GTX 990M. Their latest GPU stands up to the desktop version called the ‘Geforce GTX 980’ with 2048 CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) cores and runs at an impressive 1190 Megahertz. While NVIDIA’s mobility cards may not have boost functionality, the GTX 990M still has a higher base core speed than even the GTX 980. This firmly places NVIDA at the top of the mobile GPU market.
IFA 2015, the world’s biggest consumer electronics and home appliances trade show, took place this week and technology manufacturers pulled out all the stops. Of the many products revealed at the show in Berlin this year there are a few that push the envelope in terms of consumer technology.
Acer, a company we know so well in South Africa for their laptops, has released a gaming tablet. The sleek aluminium ‘Predator 8 GT-810’ is powered by an Intel Atom processor, runs on Android and has a high definition display. At just 8.7 millimeters thick and weighing just 350 grams, this tablet is a serious contender. Acer has also collaborated with Gameloft to refine the gaming experience for a tablet PC. Thanks to this relationship, the ‘Predator 8 GT 810’ will come preloaded with Asphalt 8.
Sony has revealed their latest series of Z5 smartphones at IFA 2015, focusing on their next generation display and camera module. The Z5 series offers the world’s first 4K display Smartphone and will come equipped with a 23 Megapixel mobile camera sensor. This camera has an impressive 0.03 second shutter speed, allowing you to capture split seconds moments and it also has the fastest autofocus response in a smartphone.
Even more impressive – and this is by far the highlight of the entire show for us – was the big reveal of the ‘ROG GX700 and G752’ gaming laptops from Asus. ROG stands for ‘Republic of Gamers’, a unique brand under the Asus banner. Their primary focus is to make laptops that extreme gamers will enjoy and this year at IFA 2015 they captivated the crowd with their next level machines. The ‘ROG GX700’ is one of the first Laptops to introduce water cooling, allowing hardware to reach higher performance whilst still staying cool. The Screen is a 17 inch 4K display powered by the latest NVIDIA mobile graphics processing unit. With added cooling it will now become easier to overclock the system, especially the 6th generation Intel processor that powers this entire system.
