Children’s theatre institution ‘Kipper’ turns 15

For a fifteenth time the magic key is taking Kipper and his friends on an adventure at the Artscape Theatre in ‘Kipper in Egypt’, showing until August 28.

On the banks of the Nile River intrepid explorer Kipper and Wilma meet Cleo, the great, great granddaughter of the very famous Cleopatra and together they discover an ancient tomb. But when Cowboy Tom arrives on the scene many of the Egyptian treasures disappear mysteriously.

Oxford University Press’s prescribed work for the foundation phase learners has become an institution in Cape Town, with 15000 pupils attending annually. Krazy Katz in conjunction with Artscape produces this fun, colourful and fast moving production. Children from across the Peninsula and even as far as Laingsberg, Swellendam and Saldanha attend the show.

The team behind ‘Kipper in Egypt’ is experienced children theatre practitioners Marinda Engelbrecht (director), Margit Meyer-Rődenbeck (scriptwriter), Emile Minnie (musical director), Michael Mitchell and Juanita Ferreira (set designers), Liande Valentyn (choreography) and Rouve Hattingh (costumes).

The cast consists of Elanza Swart in the title role, Carel Nel as Cowboy Tom and Crystal Donna Roberts (recently nominated for best actress at the Golden Lion Festival in Venice alongside actresses Juliette Binoche and Kirsten Steward) as Wilma. Fleur du Cap award winner Dean Balie, acting out numerous parts, and Liande Valentyn as Cleo rounds out the cast.

* Performances take place at 9.30am and 11am daily. To book for the week day shows, call 082 828 8505.
