Afro Popera festival to light up Artscape

Cape Town Opera are opening their 2015 season with a weekend festival of music from Thursday to Sunday, February 19 to 22. The Afro Popera festival offers two entertaining concerts – African Angels and Duet, both of which will be lighting up Opera house at Artscape.
The African Angels Concert can be seen on Thursday and Friday, February 19 and 20, at 7.30pm; and on Saturday, February 21, at 6pm.
CTO’s African Angels returns to Artscape after a sellout performance last season, and fresh from touring to over 34 cities in Holland and Germany over the past year. The 18-voice chorus is accompanied by piano and drum with a program of moving and uplifting African songs mixed with American gospel music – and of course, opera.

The Duet Concert will take place on Sunday, February 22, at 6pm and will feature Cape Town Opera and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra performing together to bring music lovers the best of symphonic and opera music. Audience members will be able to immerse themselves in the sounds of the Mother City’s very own world-class orchestra and opera company, and celebrate the launch of the Duet endowment trust, set up to ensure that Cape Town Opera and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra flourish and are sustainable for generations to come.
The concert, directed by Christine Crouse and conducted by Kamal Khan, will feature the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra; young members from the St Andrew’s Primary school in Saldanha; vocal soloists Derick Ellis, Arline Jaftha, Bongani Kubheka, Goitsemang Lehobye, Mandisinde Mbuyazwe, Lukhanyo Moyake, Xolela Sixaba and Siphamandla Yakupa; along with piano soloists Nina Schumann and Luis Magalhães. Works from Verdi, Mascagni, Puccini, Poulenc and more will form part of the programme.
