Cape Town Opera’s Afro Popera Festival, which will run from February 19 to 22, will open the opera season in Cape Town. Bookings can be made at www.computicket.com.
The festival offers two concerts – African Angels and Duet in the Opera House at Artscape.
Cape Town Opera’s African Angels will return to Artscape on Thursday, February 19 at 7.30pm, after a sell-out performance last season and fresh from touring to over 34 cities in Holland and Germany over the past year. The 18-voice chorus is accompanied by piano and drum with a program of African songs mixed with American gospel music – and of course, opera. (Tickets are priced at R150.)
The Duet Concert will take place on Sunday, February 22 at 6pm.
The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Cape Town Opera joint endowment trust, aptly named Duet, was established in August 2014 for the advancement and preservation of both companies.
Duet aims to build a fund to ensure that, while growing the capital, there is sufficient income to provide on-going injections of money to the joint beneficiaries.
Cape Town Opera and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra join forces to bring you the best of symphonic and opera music; launch the Duet Endowment Trust and start the new-year with an injection of great sound.
The concert will feature the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, young members from the St Andrew’s Primary school in Saldanha, vocal soloists Derick Ellis, Arline Jaftha, Bongani Kubheka, Goitsemang Lehobye, Mandisinde Mbuyazwe, Lukhanyo Moyake, Xolela Sixaba and Siphamandla Yakupa along with piano soloists Nina Schumann and Luis Magalhães with works from Verdi, Mascagni, Puccini and Poulenc and more. It will be directed by Christine Crouse and conducted by Kamal Khan. (Tickets are R250.)
* There are also weekend tickets available and festival goers can purchase a reduced ticket price of R300 to both concerts (a saving of R100).
