Fugard Theatre goes out of house with ‘West Side Story’

Five years on from its official opening in February 2010, the Fugard Theatre has announced its first out of house production.
In July of this year, Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre will proudly present a grand-scale four week season of Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim’s musical ‘West Side Story’, based on a conception of Jerome Robbins.
From the creators and producers of the Fugard Theatre’s smash hit musical ‘The Rocky Horror Show’, and the highly anticipated ‘Cabaret’ (from March 10 at the Fugard Theatre), comes one of the world’s greatest musical theatre productions, ‘West Side Story’, which first premiered on Broadway in 1957.

Under the direction of Matthew Wild, the musical direction of Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and with choreography by Louisa Talbot, the Fugard Theatre team will present a full cast of 40 South African cast members, and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra in the orchestra pit.
The cast will be led by South African theatre stars Jonathan Roxmouth (‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Sunset Boulevard’, ‘A Handful of Keys’, ‘Grease’) as Tony, Lynelle Kenned (‘Blood Brothers’, ‘Showboat’, ‘Orpheus in Africa’) as Maria, Bianca Le Grange (‘Blood Brothers’) as Anita, Christopher Jaftha (‘Dirty Dancing’) as Bernardo and Daniel Buys (‘Jersey Boys’, ‘The Rocky Horror Show’) as Action.

The season will run from July 23 to August 23 at the Artscape Opera House. Performances are from Tuesdays to Fridays at 8pm, on Saturdays at 4pm and 8pm and on Sundays at 2pm and 6pm. Tickets are now on sale through Computicket or 0861 915 8000 or via the Artscape box office on 021 421 7695.
Owing to the very limited season, advance booking recommended.
