We trust that everyone has had a great festive season and hope you have all made New Year’s resolutions that you hope to stick to. Back at Gadget Buddies HQ we have decided to go leaner and meaner this year, by getting rid of chunky devices that take up a lot of room. Now we all know that to play most modern PC games requires a monster computer rig with loads of equipment inside, including a cooling system to protect your investment.
In 2015 it’s all about reducing the clutter. We saw how computer chips became smaller last year, all the way to the R5 coin sized Intel Edison processor and how laptops started packing greater power. 2014 was a great year and has definitely laid the foundation for 2015 to be better.
We recently got our hands onto an Alienware gaming laptop. Now Alienware makes very specific hardware that really requires a fundi to enjoy them – and to think that their parent company is Dell. The latest is the Alienware 17 and boy does it pack a punch. What is even more awesome about this latest iteration is that Dell has made the laptop slimmer, which is significant because the previous models were quite bulky.
The Alienware 17 is equipped with an i7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M graphics card. They have also gone for an all HD 17 inch LED Display and Dolby 5.1 sound. Basically. if you are into gaming with the occasional work sessions, this is the laptop for you. We tried out ‘Uncharted 4’ on it and were blown away by its performance, while playing in full detail.
Open Source Gaming
This something that is quite new in South Africa and for some time it has been kept away from us. Thanks to the World Wide Web we can stay in touch and get into the realm of a new kind of handheld gaming. GCW is a company that makes a gaming device that emulates NES, SNES, GBA, Sega, Playstation and PC. Their system runs on Linux and comes in a common handheld package with an easy layout. This one is a bit of a tinker toy because it comes completely blank, allowing the user to install software and files. So we would not suggest getting one if you are interested in gaming straight out of the box.
The reason we like it so much is because it offers a modern high definition platform to play the games that came out way back in the day. Games like ‘Tetris’, ‘Street Fighter’ and Sega classic ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’.
So 2015 here we come. The time to reduce that clutter is now. Step one is to get rid of all the unused gadgets and gizmos and start getting into composite devices.
