Cape Talk, Cliffcentral.com and Expresso Entertainment Reporter Jen Su brings us the gourmet lowdown at the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards.

South Africa’s Top 10 restaurants and celebrity chefs earlier this week enjoyed an extravagant evening of culinary distinction accompanied by a multi-dimensional gourmet feast served for the recent Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards at Thunder City in Cape Town.
Having attended the awards last year (and loving them!) – this year, the Eat Out Awards really took on a whole new level of WOW! Yes, it is definitely the “Oscars” for the who’s who in the restaurant industry!

Guests arrived in luxury Mercedes-Benz cars – and the Thunder City airport hangar was transformed into a glamorous venue with tables to seat 800 guests, as well an endless open kitchen, gigantic screens on both sides of the venue, and the champagne was flowing non-stop.
The Test Kitchen in Cape Town, already ranked #48 in the world – took first place as Restaurant of the Year in SA for the third year running.
Five Hundred at The Saxon Hotel in Joburg retained its Number 2 position, with 2013 Chef of the Year David Higgs again praised for his creativity. Among the many winners of the evening, Chantel Dartnall of Restaurant Mosaic at the Orient scooped up San Pellegrino Chef of the Year. The Nederburg Rising Star Award went to Kobus van der Merwe of Oep ve Koep in Paternoster.
Emcee for the evening, Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp showed off her beautiful baby bump in a long coral evening gown paired with a green and white shawl.TV personalities Katlego Maboe, dressed in a crisp burgundy suit jacket and black shirt, arrived with Leigh-Anne Williams in a sleek and sophisticated black cocktail dress by Lipsy.
The Next 48hOURS Editor, Naushad Khan, sported a purple silk tie which matched the lighting theme of the venue.
Eat Out Editor Abigail Donnelly, along with Andy Fenner, Arnold Tanzer, Kate Wilson, Reuben Riffel and Caro de Waal – were this year’s judges.
Can’t wait for next year!
