A new production of the award-winning classic play ‘Sizwe Banzi is Dead’ will premiere at the Market Theatre on November 26 for a limited season. The run will end on December 14, after which the production will tour international stages in 2015.
The creative collaboration between Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona produced South African classics in the early 1970s that dominated the theatre landscape locally and globally – with ‘Sizwe Banzi is Dead’ and ‘The Island’ being among their most revered works that continue to be reproduced around the world today. The Broadway run of the two plays earned Kani and Ntshona a joint Tony Award for best actor in a play in 1975.
Forty years later, ‘Sizwe Banzi is Dead’ is back in a new incarnation starring a new generation of South African actors. The new production of ‘Sizwe Banzi’, directed by John Kani, will see Atandwa Kani and Mncedisi Baldwin Shabangu sharing a stage for the first time as they recreate the iconic characters made famous by Kani and Ntshona.
The play, set in Styles’ photographic studio, follows Sizwe’s quest for survival in the Port Elizabeth of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Sizwe has been caught without a passbook and must return to King William’s Town to his poverty-stricken family or take a chance that could force him to abandon his given name. He is forced to rethink what makes up a man’s identity.
* Performances will take place from Tuesdays to Saturdays at 8.15pm nightly. There will also be a 3.15pm matinee on Sundays.
