It’s been a cracker of a week in the music world over the past week. From the MTV EMA’s, to the passing of one of the godfathers of current hip hop, to John Legend arriving, to KDay 2015 being announced – so much, that I can’t just choose one thing to focus on, so this week will touch on each one.
On Sunday the MTV Europe Music Awards took place in Glasgow and were hosted by Nicki Minaj. The winners were: Best Song – Ariana Grande – ‘Problem’ ft. Iggy Azalea; Best Pop – One Direction; Best Female – Ariana Grande; Best Male – Justin Bieber; Artist On The Rise- 5 Seconds Of Summer; Best Live – One Direction; Best New – 5 Seconds Of Summer; Best Video – Katy Perry for ‘Dark Horse’ ft. Juicy J; Best Rock – Linkin Park; Best Alternative – Thirty Seconds To Mars; Best Hip Hop – Nicki Minaj; Best Electronic – Calvin Harris; Best Song With A Message – Beyoncé with ‘Pretty Hurts’; Biggest Fans – One Direction; Best Look – Katy Perry; Best PUSH – 5 Seconds Of Summer; Best World Stage – Enrique Iglesias; Worldwide Act – Bibi Zhou; and the Global Icon award went to Ozzy Osbourne

From one big music event to another: John Legend hits the shores of Cape Town soon – in fact he’s performing at the Grand Arena, Grandwest from Saturday to Monday night, as his ‘All of Me’ Tour, which is completely sold out, strives to give fans a night to remember. I was lucky enough to get tickets a few weeks ago (as the saying goes, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know), so I’m gonna be there this weekend too, amongst the fans, waving my lighter in the air to all his slow jams.
Then onto some sad news – Big Bank Hank, from the Sugar Hill Gang, passed away on Tuesday, aged 57.

He was a true hip hop icon, helping put rap and hip hop into the commercial stream with the big hit he and the gang did, ‘Rappers Delight’, the first rap song in history to make it onto the Top40.
Then, to uplift your spirits after that sombre moment, KFM’s KDay 2015 has been announced – and I’ve gotta say, I am super excited!
KDay will be taking place next year at a brand new awesome venue, Newlands Cricket Ground, on February 28 next year.
The line-up, as per usual, is the crème de la crème of local talent, including Beatenberg, MiCasa, Prime Circle, Lloyd Cele, DJ Kent, Jimmy Nevis, GoodLuck, Matthew Mole, and Elvis Blue, and I can confirm the rumours that more artists will be added. Tickets start at R240.
