South Africa has in recent years become quite the hub for filming. From ‘Deep Blue Sea’ and ‘Lord of War’, to ‘Blue Crush 2’, ‘Invictus’ and ‘The Giver’ (to name but a few), all have featured filming done in our beautiful South Africa. We’ve also been home to the filming of series like ‘Black Sails’ and ‘SAF3’, and are providing the backdrop to upcoming movie, ‘Grimsby’, which is Sasha Baron Cohen’s latest film that is currently being shot in Cape Town, as well as to Charlize Theron’s new film, ‘The Last Face’, which is being directed by her rumored fiancé, Sean Penn.
But apart from the Hollywood movies and series, it seems that South Africa is starting to become home to international music videos.
At the end of last year, Lily Allen was in Cape Town, where she filmed her video for ‘Air Balloon’, and more recently, The Script have been in Johannesburg, where they filmed the video for their latest album, ‘Superheroes’. The ‘Superheroes’ video, which was directed by the British Vaughan Arnell, was shot in the Johannesburg township, Alexandra, and features the band jamming on-stage from dusk till dawn to a whole lot of excited Alexandra residents.
The song has already received a lot of airplay on South African radio, and is the first single to be released from their highly anticipated fourth album ‘No Sound Without Silence’, which is set to be released worldwide on September 15.
Switching over to the medium of live performance, let’s take a look at my pick of the weekend’s top gigs:
• With it being Women’s Month (and Women’s Day weekend), be sure to celebrate one of the most powerful female musicians of all-time on Friday and Saturday, August 8 and 9. Who am I speaking about? None other than the French artist Edith Piaf. Ambassador of the French chanson, Dr Daniele Pascal, who is well known for singing the music of Piaf, Jacques Brel and other French legends, will be reviving some of the most influential Piaf songs, such as ‘Non Je Ne Regrette Rien’, ‘La Vie En Rose’, ‘L’Accordioniste’, ‘Milord’, and many more nostalgic hits. It all takes place at Villa Pascal, 28 Van der Westhuizen Ave, Durbanville, from 7.30pm. Tickets are R150 each. To book, call: 021 975 2566.
• Another event happening on Friday, August 8, will feature trance music legends Symphonix, who will be performing for the one night only in the Mother City at the Imperial Bar on 31 Shortmarket Street, Cape Town. It all starts off at 10pm and tickets are R120 (available from webtickets.co.za).
• Then on Saturday, August 9, enjoy one of my favourite local rock bands, Woodstock Mafia, as they jam acoustically at the House of Machines on 84 Shortmarket Street, Cape Town. The gig starts at 7pm and entrance is free. For more info, call 021 426 1400.
