Artemis, the contemporary dance company from Italy, will make its Cape Town debut with their production ‘Traviata’ at Artscape on Thursday, June 5 at 8pm.
The performance is part of a broader cooperation between Artemis Danza and Dance For All, supported by Artscape, the Italian Consulate in Cape Town and the Italian Institute of Culture in Pretoria. All proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to the Dance for All Training Programme.
Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’ is based on the Alexandre Dumas play ‘La Dame aux Camelias’, with Artemis’s adaptation being helmed by Monica Casadei.
Employing the vigorous and energetic gestures that typically characterize Casadei’s choreographic language, the dancer’s body embodies the passion, the distress, and ultimately the tragedy of Violetta’s and Alfredo’s affair. This presentation blends the classic with the contemporary, featuring Verdi’s music and Artemis Danza’s choreography.
Dance for All’s production, ‘Kaleidoscope’, will take place at Artscape on Saturday, June 7, at 2.15pm and 8.15pm. The production will entertain dance lovers with a showcase of the diverse dance styles that DFA teaches.
This includes classical ballet, contemporary dance, Spanish dance and also elements of neo classical dance.
InSPIRAtions Youth Company, one of DFA’s projects, will also perform on Sunday, June 8, at 7.30pm to raise funds for The Phyllis Spira Trust. Former DFA students who have benefited from the trust will join on stage.
The evening’s guest artists will be from the Cape Academy of Performing Arts. The trust was set up to enable talented DFA students, who have completed their dance training, to gain further dance training at a reputable dance institution.
Funds are donated in memory of Prima Ballerina Assoluta Phyllis Spira, ensuring that her legacy lives on through dancers of the future.
