Visitors to Clock Tower Square at the V&A Waterfront can now test their mental dexterity and strategic skills on a giant outdoor 2.5m x 2.5m chess board. Smaller, dedicated chess games built into outdoor tables are also available for a more intimate game.
The space created for chess forms part of the V&A Waterfront’s development strategy to energise the space between buildings by creating vibrant spaces in which locals of all ages can relax.
In addition to chess, Clock Tower Square now also boasts a Pétanque court with boule playing sets available on request. Younger visitors will be kept entertained by the Kids Ahoy playground in the square. Face painters, stilt walkers, a marimba band and balloon sculptors will add an air of festivity for visitors who may prefer to simply sit at the plentiful seating overlooking the square.
“Bringing spaces such as the historic Clock Tower precinct to life and making it appealing to the public also forms part of our commitment to the Design Capital 2014 concept of using design to bring people together in urban areas. It’s all about creating a sense of community,” says Carla White, spokesperson for the V&A Waterfront..
All the Clock Tower Square activities are free for all to enjoy anytime.
