Lucy Tops becomes Bette Midler

Local singer Lucy Tops can be seen in ‘Stealing the Show: Bette Midler’ at the Alexander Upstairs Theatre on Strand Street until Saturday, May 17 at 9pm nightly. Directed by Garth Tavares and written by Jon Keevy, the 45 minute show will pay tribute to all things Midler.
Midler started off singing in bathhouses and went on to fill stadiums. Her charm, talent and humility raised her above other divas and secured her place in many people’s hearts. Audiences will be able to join Tops as a luckless and desperate diva discovering the reasons why Midler’s music has the power to move fans like few others in the smallest theatre in Cape Town, a very long way from Las Vegas.

This is the first show in Alexander Upstairs’ own tribute series ‘Stealing the Show’, a creative partnership to put the talented voices of Cape Town to reinterpreting the greatest singers in the world. If there’s someone you’d like to see on the stage, send the organisers a suggestion at, and they’ll see what they can do. Tops is a graduate of the Waterfront Theatre school who has rocked covers and tributes at the Barnyard Theatre, but lately is getting ready for several shows with Follow Spot Productions at the National Arts Festival, after which she’ll be returning to the Fugard with the run-away success, ‘The Rocky Horror Show’.
