This past weekend I travelled over 1600km to Durban to attend the Tourism Indaba, one of the largest tourism marketing events on the African calendar and one of the top three ‘must visit’ events of its kind on the global calendar. For years I have heard about the Indaba, and I finally had the chance to experience this three day trade event that attracts well over 13000 delegates from the travel tourism and related industries.
It showcases the widest variety of Southern Africa’s best tourism products, and attracts international buyers and media from across the world. For two years in a row, Indaba has won the award for Africa’s best travel and tourism show. This award was presented by the Association of World Travel Awards.
I went along to MC at the Wesgro stand (Wesgro is the official Investment and Trade promotion agency for the Western Cape). I was part of all the activations taking place at the stand, which included Riel dancing with the team from !Khwa ttu, the San Education and Culture Centre situated 70km north-west of Cape Town (this centre offers you the unique experience of being introduced to the world of the descendants of the first indigenous people of Southern Africa.) There was also the introduction of a brand new mobile phone app called The Corkage Collective, a new mobile interface that will keep people discovering new experiences around the wine route of the Western Cape.
There was also a cocktail function hosted by The Cape Town Big 6 that represents one destination with six unforgettable experiences. The six iconic attractions offer visitors uniquely South African experiences, and include Cape Point with its dramatic scenery; Groot Constantia historic vineyards and restaurants; the exquisite Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden; Robben Island and its infamous prison; the unforgettable Table Mountain Cableway; and the V&A Waterfront, the bustling cosmopolitan leisure, entertainment and business destination.
I enjoyed discovering some amazing things that are offer in the Western Cape, thanks to the team from Wesgro. The perfect way to end of the Tourism Indaba was when the Stand won gold at the Indaba (this being designed by Resource Design & made out of X-Board).
