CapeGate Shopping Centre celebrated 20 years of freedom on Monday April 28 by supporting international non-profit organisation Stop Hunger Now in packing 20736 nourishing meals for distribution to needy preschools in and around Cape Town. This was done with the support of 160 volunteers and funding from Hyprop, owner of CapeGate Shopping Centre.
“It was refreshing to see such a great turn-out from the public at our meal-packaging event, especially from our younger “born-free” citizens,” says David Jacobs, Cape Town branch manager of Stop Hunger Now.
“Their contribution will help Stop Hunger Now ensures that 3000 of South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens, the children we feed, can enjoy a healthy meal. We are grateful to Hyprop and the CapeGate Centre for this opportunity to make a meaningful difference to hunger in our community.”
CapeGate launched the first of a series for ‘Meals in Memory’ events taking place every second week at a different Hyprop Centre and ending at Canal Walk Shopping Centre on Mandela Day, July 18.
Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa (SHN SA) is a volunteer based meal packaging and results oriented nutrition programme, which was started in South Africa in 2009. There are currently two full-time operations (Johannesburg and Cape Town).
