Monday will see the 20th annual South African Music Awards (or SAMA’s) taking place in Johannesburg at the Sun City Superbowl. The SAMA’s are the South African equivalent of the American Music Awards and the Grammys in the USA.
One artist that Capetonians will have their eyes on at the awards is the Mother City’s very own Jimmy Nevis, who has received two nominations in the Record of the Year category for his 2013 hits ‘Heartboxing’ and ‘In Love with You’.
The Record of the Year is based entirely on fan votes and we’re hoping that Jimmy, who’s had recent hits like ‘Balloon’, featuring Kwesta; and ‘Jericho’, which sees him doubling up with Pascal and Pearce, brings home the award.
Nevis, who only started his musical career in 2012 when he released ‘Elephant Shoes’, has experienced pretty much instant success, producing hit after hit, and performing at some of the biggest music festivals, including KDay 2014 and the Cape Town Jazz Festival.
In a recent interview, Nevis was asked if he expected the success, to which his answer was a surprising yes, especially for someone taking on the typically hard life that most musicians face. He added, “I just didn’t expect for it to happen so soon. When I started this whole thing, I didn’t plan to fail – I knew what I was getting myself into and so I was expecting some success at some stage – but not as awesome as what it is now.”
The Cape Town heartthrob also revealed his key to staying relevant and successful, saying “You constantly need to be working and giving your best if you want to continuously make an impact”.
If you’d like to help Jimmy Nevis make an impact at the SAMA’s, then vote for him for Record of the Year.
To vote for ‘Heartboxing’, text the letter “L” and the name of your region to 33123. To vote for ‘In Love With You’ SMS “M” and the region you live in to the same number. Each SMS is charged at R1.5 and free text messages do not apply. Please note there is a limit of 10 votes per mobile phone. The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony on April 28 at Sun City.
