‘The Donkey Child’ to showcase at Hillbrow Theatre

The production ‘The Donkey Child’ will be showing at the The Hillbrow Theatre in Joburg from March 26 to 28.
Using the story by acclaimed actor, writer and director Lindiwe Matshikiza as a starting point, ‘The Donkey Child’ is a multidisciplinary theatre project in which several independent Johannesburg-based artists collaborate with children and young people associated with the Hillbrow Theatre Project and Keleketla! Library.
Members of the regular theatre training groups that make up the Hillbrow Theatre Project, and dancers and choreographers associated with Keleketla! Library, will bring their talent, ingenuity and independent artistic commitment to this project. Together with a carefully selected handful of artists – all of whose work frequently involves collaboration and a multi/cross-disciplinary approach – they have formed a unique collective.

Over a nine week process, the group has explored the themes in the story in relation to who they are as individuals and as a community, using all the skills and resources at their disposal: dance, circus arts, experimental sound, choral singing, ventriloquism, puppetry, clowning, electromagnetism. The play is a result of that process.
Johannesburg performances of the play, as well as an exhibition of the nine week process, will take place at The Hillbrow Theatre
