Living loud with Liezel: February adventures

It’s hard to believe that the first month of the year is almost over and that February is just around the corner. There are so many events and activities happening in and around the Mother City over February that it makes it difficult for one to narrow it all down to just a few things to do. For February I have decided to challenge myself to do things and got to places that I haven’t been to before. I am calling February “The Month Of Fun”, and also “The Month Of New Adventures”.

One of my first activities will be taking part in the Tankwa Trek. From the creators of the Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek and the producers of Bigshot Media, comes this three day stage race like no other. Winding through the beautiful Bokkeveld and Witzenburg areas, this race features unique scenery, warm hospitality and tough, yet exhilarating riding. (For dates, route info and more, visit to www.tankwatrek.co.za.)

Jazz on the Rocks combines the finest elements of outdoor living i.e. sun, sea and all that jazz in a pristine setting off the Cape West Coast. The Cape Columbine Nature Reserve plays host to the 4th Annual Jazz on the Rocks from February 27 to March 3. (Visit www.jazzontherocks.net.)

Tietiesbaai, a 90 minute drive from Cape Town, is an unspoiled stretch of beach in the Reserve. The Reserve itself borders Paternoster, a quaint fishing village with various accommodation offerings for those who prefer comforts other than a camp fire.
The event itself is billed as family friendly, enabling families to enjoy the pleasures and intimacy of the great outdoors.
A town that I haven’t spent time in is Robertson and I am looking forward to the Hands on Harvest there, which will take place for two months from February 1 to March 31. It is an event where wine aficionados and budding vintners get a chance to experience the magic of harvest for a day – without having to quit their day jobs. Some of the activities guests can look forward to include: grape picking; bunch sorting; stomping your own grapes; grape vs. wine tasting; a harvest market; vineyard tractor trips; wine tasting by horse cart, and much more. (Visit www.handsonharvest.com.)

I’m also keen to try the following in February:
• Oudtshoorn Ballooning Experience – the unique sensation of Hot Air Ballooning in the Klein Karoo. Drifting on a gentle breeze, one is meant to enjoy a sense of peace and tranquillity taking in the panoramic views of Oudtshoorn and the majestic Swartberg Mountain range. (Visit www.oudtshoornballooning.co.za.)
• Felix Unite River Adventures – This company offers a river rafting trip with 5-star bush cuisine, comfortable beds, hot showers and flushing toilets. You’ll get to experience the Breede River in all of its raw beauty. (Visit www.felixunite.com.)

I am always open to adventure or touristy experiences in our city or province, so feel free to Tweet suggestions on what I should do, or where I should go to @liezelv.
