Long established and a firm favourite with locals and visitors to Cape Town, the V&A Waterfront Free Summer Sunset Concerts have been in full swing since December.
Taking place on the outdoor Amphitheatre, these acoustic performances present an ideal way to spend a summer’s evening on the water’s edge.
The Amy Winehouse Tribute Band will take to the stage on Saturday, January 11, from 6pm to 7pm; followed by Nick Turner on Sunday, January 12, also from 6pm to 7pm.
The Amy Winehouse Tribute Band was founded by singer and songwriter Francesca Biancoli in Italy and has now moved to Cape Town. The band consists of a renowned rhythm section with the addition of horns, guitars and backing vocals on occasion. The band performs a repertoire of the most well-known of Winehouse’s songs.
Accomplished singer/songwriter and guitarist Nick Turner was a founding member of Sons Of Trout in the late 1990s, and later one half of Mikanic, with fellow Trout violinist Mike Rennie.
Turner’s music spans various genres, with influences ranging from rock, reggae and African to hip-hop, ghoema and jazz.
After spending several years in New York, Turner returned home in 2009 to become involved in a number of music projects. He has appeared at various festivals and collaborated with the likes of Zolani Mahola (Freshly Ground), Karen Zoid and Louis Mhlanga, as well as playing solo, in a duo with bassist extraordinaire Schalk Joubert, and in a trio with the addition of another SA music legend Ash Read on drums.
