Bring out the old fro and dust off the platforms-its New Year’s Eve time

Bring out the old fro and dust off the platforms
By Jonathan Duguid
Can you believe that New Year’s is just a few days away? This year has
certainly flown by.
It’s actually rather interesting how time just does seem to fly by – one moment
we were back in the years of retro and all of a sudden we’re in the years of
electro! And something’s got to be said for the way we hold on to the music of
the 1970s that capture a part of people’s lives when afros were bigger, shoes
were higher off the ground, and an LP player was the ultimate accessory of
anybody who was cool.
Attempting to reignite the flame of those years we yearn for, when boogying
meant dancing and not picking one’s nose, will be MoFunk, this Friday,
December 27, at the Jade Lounge, 39 Main Road, Greenpoint. This Cape Town
landmark event will feature a top class deejay line-up consisting of DJ D-Form,
Nick Birkby, Rozammo, and Mr MO. The trip down memory lane will kick off at
8pm. To book, call 073 921 8934. This event is closed to men under the age of
25 and women under the age of 23.
If you fancy a drive along the beautiful Kommetjie shoreline, you should check
out the seven-piece country dub group, The Suitcase Hearts, performing live at
the Cape Farmhouse, which can be found at the M65 and M66 Junction,
Scarborough. The show starts at 3pm and promises to be good fun!
On to New Year’s Eve…there are so many things to do, that I thought I’d just
list my top three selection:
• Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens will be hosting quite the spectacle with
GoldFish, Yoav and Tailor all performing to help you welcome 2014. Tickets are
R290 from Webtickets.co.za, and the evening starts-off at 8pm. Don’t forget to
pack your picnic basket and warm clothes.
• Trance lovers, don’t miss the Rezonance festival, which features three days
of electronic music, and of course camping! It runs from December 31 to
January 2. Tickets cost R470, and are available at Quicket.co.za
• The Electric New Year’s Eve Ball at the Cape Town International Convention
Centre will see Carl Cox back in the Mother City and setting the dance floor
ablaze. Tickets range from R470 to R2550 per person and booking is through
Computicket.
