Pull out those faded denims and roll them in glitter – it’s time to take a trip along the Milky Way. This year’s MCQP will feature the brand new and exciting theme of “Space Cowboys.” This is one of my favourite events on my Cape Town party calendar, and I haven’t missed one since moving here.

This year will be no different to the years before as between 10000 and 13 000 fabulously dressed Mother City Queer Project fans will descend on Cape Town Stadium on Saturday December 14 in their brightest Space Cowboys costumes to celebrate the twentieth MCQP party – easily Cape Town’s most colourful annual event.

MCQP, one of the longest running annual dance events in the country and one of the biggest costume parties in the southern hemisphere, started in 1994 as a celebration of South Africa’s new constitution. Twenty years later and the event is still growing and offering something new to look forward to. It will be the first time in the event’s history that the gates will open at 5:30pm, giving partygoers lots of time to enjoy the various food stalls, which will be managed by the Old Biscuit Mill.

The line-up of musical cats is just as tasty. Goodluck, The Nomadic Orchestra, The City, Red Tape Riot, Al Bairre, Carla Conradie and Draadkar will keep the crowds on their feet before they take over the dance floor.

DJ’s who will be performing on the Psy-Trance, House, Electro, Butterbox and the Smile90.4FM Disco dance floors will include, amongs others: Neil Ovens, DJ Squeek, Jamie Saint, Sean Oxley, DJ Kingsize, Dean Fuel, The 2AM’s, Ian Skene, Chris Jack, Sam Roy, Lady M, Kaatze vs Levi Botes, Nick Supply, Das Kapital, Hyphen and Grime House.

If you haven’t attended before, get your friends to join in the fun. It’s probably the most fun you’ll have with your friends this year. Decide on a costume idea and try and make it yourself. Don’t be shy – add as much glitter as possible. The more over-the-top, the better.

Irit Noble and friends will be welcoming you on the pink carpet and will make sure you enjoy your 15 seconds of fame. I’m looking forward to seeing you there in my cowgirl outfit and my group of friends. If you spot me there, come past and say “howdy”.
