Top Korean violinist Yura Lee will be performing at the Hugo Concert Series, three years after winning the first prize in the fifth Unisa International String Competition. Cape Town classical music fans can look forward to seeing her perform on November 7 in a Concerto with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra at the Cape Town City Hall, and on November 10 in a recital at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow.
Lee whirlwind tour of South Africa will include performances in all major cities, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth, as well as Grahamstown and Hermanus.
For her solo recitals, Lee will be accompanied by South African pianist Tertia Visser Downie, who also accompanied her when she won the Unisa competition. Audiences can look forward to hearing virtuoso works composed for violin and piano by Beethoven, Brahms, Kreisler and Tchaikovsky.
Since winning the Unisa competition, Lee added another two major victories to her impressive string of prizes – First Prize at the Yuri Bashmet International Competition 2013 (Russia) and First Prize at the ARD Competition 2013 (Germany).
The artist is now enjoying a career that spans almost two decades and which takes her all over the world. Her musical integrity and compelling artistry are constantly praised by both critics and some of the most respected artists of today.
Lee studied at the Juilliard School (New York City), New England Conservatory (Boston), Salzburg Mozarteum (Austria), and at the Kronberg Academy (Germany). Her main teachers included Namyun Kim, Dorothy DeLay, Hyo Kang, Miriam Fried, Paul Biss, Thomas Riebl, Ana Chumachenko, and Nobuko Imai.
As a soloist, she has appeared with many major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Saint Louis Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, NDR Symphonieorchester, Monte Carlo Philharmonic and the Hong Kong Philharmonic.
