The weather man has reported that the weather will be lovely this weekend in The Mother City, which means it’ll be the perfect opportunity to head outdoors with the family. Now, if you’re looking for something specific to do over the next 48hOURS or so, there are two great family activities taking place in Cape Town, and I will be at both events as well.
On Saturday, why not waddle on African Penghuin Awareness Day from the Two Oceans Aquarium to the Green Point lighthouse and back, raising awareness among members of the public and encouraging passing vehicles to ‘hoot for penguins’. The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) will also be celebrating this day by releasing rehabilitated penguins on to Seaforth Beach in Simon’s Town. Members of the public will have the opportunity to witness this special occasion at the V&A Amphitheatre via a live streaming. There will also be the opportunity to meet the SANCCOB ambassador penguin.
The other event is The KFM Outsurance Gun Run, with distances to suit everyone: a 21km half marathon, 10km run/walk or 5km fun run/walk. The latter option is specifically aimed at families, younger participants and walkers. The finish is situated on the Sea Point Promenade opposite the Winchester Mansions Hotel. This year, the Anna Foundation, a non-profit organisation working with children who live on farms and in rural areas of the Western Cape, will be the beneficiary of the event. Their mission is to support rural communities through education, sports and life development programmes that encompass the three “R’s”, namely ‘Reading, Running, Right-ing’.
So why not enjoy an event-packed morning that will include the KFM music stage, the traditional firing of the battlefield gun, prize givings and a lucky draw where one participant will win R20000 and another lucky runner will win a 40 inch Samsung LCD TV. Food and drink vendors will keep you nourished so come on down and enjoy the festivities.
